And so this is the piece cracked out of its printing supports ( which are as interesting as a the finished painting, I’m keeping all the parts to see what I can build out of them) there are faults and areas where the print had failed or it can not cope with what is asked of it.
All these faults need to be embraced it’s where digital becomes almost human, nothing is perfect all these glitches and misprints are the Wabi Sabi that fuel my interesting this new technology.
In other words this is what happens when you give an Artist new technology, he or she will search out the Fxxk up buttons as this is when things step up a level..

20 hours later and finally there is silence.
Next to crack it out of its supports.
On first impression there are a couple of bits that could be better like the flat part on the top of the head and the area on the shoulder that has not fully printed.
But all in all I’m pretty stoked with how this has worked out.
I’m going to rescan the original and see if I can get a better version.
For now I’m going to enjoy the piece as the constant noise from the printer can get to you😂

If at first you don’t succeed.
So after the last print and it’s problem I found myself at 11pm doing another scan and setting the printer going.
It’s a long print at 20 hours so far it’s looking interesting.
I love the architecture that is formed round the piece to support it. The little curly bits coming off it are so organic.

Keeping positive nothing is lost from this exercise I have learnt from it in many ways.
Big builds take a long time next to scan again, switch nozzle and get some better glue.

Back scanning and printing, today I changed the nozzle head (another learning curve)and also learnt how to print a hollow model, it cuts the printing time down to 3 hours.
So the print is in light grey ( yes another colour other than black @timisherwood ).

This morning’s wake up discovery from the land of 3D printing. I’m really happy with how this scan and print has worked out next I want to do a hollow version.
Some friends have commented that they thought I would be making more complicated shapes with this kit, sorry but that is not what I’m about I’m interested in the sculptural possibilities of what I can produce along with the defamiliarization of what happens to a scanned item.

So many learning curves in one day.
So I invested in a Sense 3D scanner which is what I use in Uni. I thought it would be a case of plugging in and downloading the software to my MacBook, not so as the software is to acceptable to Mac anymore, it also seems that the company don’t make this scanner anymore and all other stuff will disappear in 2022.
Any way after lots of head scratching it was time to reinstate an old windows laptop and boom the scanner works, and after trial and error I now have a scan and a model printing.

So another evening with the sound of gears and driver belts humming. 11 hours later and I’m rewarded with a white head.
The more I get used to working this machine the more the mystery of 3D printing fades away, yes there are definite learning curves, the realisation that you have to monitor what is printing because these printers have a mind of their own.
Also check for tangles in the filament oh and most important have you put enough glue on the printer bed? If not your print will lift an float away along with all your filament.
Apart from all these curves I’m feeling rather excited by it and what can be achieved.
As my friend said Luddite Jeff is fading and future Jeff is forming
So watch this space as there definitely is more to come.
