Mortar carving

Today’s embarkation in to the artistic unknown has resulted in these four heads.
Due to the work done on my house there was quite a few chunks of mortar deposited at the side of my house.
Being curious and wanting a break from carving in to woodblocks I decided to carve in to the mortar which with basic tools you can get some fairly instant results.
Working this way also ties in to the world of folk art and outsider art in that the artists use what is at hand instead of worrying if it is a suitable medium or not.

The restless dreams that trouble my mind

For the last few days I have been sluggishly working on this piece
The restless dreams that trouble my mind
Dowel, raffia, hag stone, wood off cuts.
I am starting to miss many of my tools as I’m using carving knives and a rotary tool, annoyingly I’m going through sanding hoops rather fast.
I’m sure many of my influences can be seen in this current work from folk art to tribal art Picasso to Beuys
It’s all in the mix of what influences and inspires me

Lethargy

As with many I have found this period of lockdown hard. At times I find it hard to focus and at others I feel like a mass lethargy is washing over me like waves on the beach.
I’m also feeling a lot of guilt, guilt over not producing work I know this sounds crazy as i seem to be extremely productive but some times I feel I could do more. Guilt for not spending time with my daughter at times we are shuffling round the house the only time we come together is for meals
And finally guilt for not reading, I have all these books I’m dipping in and out of but they are not really satisfying my thirst for knowledge
The only book that has grabbed my attention is Self Portrait the eyes within by William Mitchell. Some of my Salford University friends will know if him for the totemic concrete sculptures the Minute Men. This book is an honest account by the artist, talking about his life and work practice. I have found it easy going and chocked full of information on how to create sculptural pieces out of concrete.
In these times easy reading is all that seems to satisfy the soul

Instability

The instability of isolation
.
Apologies for the photos I’m running out of space.
.
Finally finished this stack ..
Wood off cuts, wood chips ( produced whilst carving), hag stone to offset weight and to keep this stack standing .
.
It was not easy carving and I now have a nice blister on my finger.

Next week back to ladder me thinks.

Three heads

Three new heads, you would think by now that I would have some sort of formula.
Yes they all have a similar look but each carving is like a new adventure.

Components

This is the other part of the studio. Components are all laid out waiting for that burst of creativity.
I’m currently thinking about making a silicon mold of a head and then casting them in concrete. .
