Well that’s a bit of a curve ball I really was not expecting to carve this. I have to say this book was the best £5 I have spent, it is my go to book for inspiration. Published by the British Museum it full of thought provoking artefacts from the museum’s collection added to that it is a dyslexics dream book no writing just pictures. So I started today feeling pretty frustrated hence the Kong sketch (which may become a painting of sorts), then I had a talk with @eatkatemoss who helped me make sense of the way I’m feeling about my art practice. His wise words were “keep making “ so this afternoon I sat down with this big lump of mortar and went at it, ( I should have taken a before photo) some hours later this is what I found within. It’s my biggest piece to date and I’m rather pleased with how it has worked out. Today’s bit of mortar carving it’s a bit more complicated and I don’t know if it really works, but it was interesting to carve and to challenge the mind. I have to move away from heads at some point but they are what i see when I look at the raw state. For some reason I think about Picasso in lockdown in Paris during world war 2, how he had to improvise with what materials he had to hand to create art. Am I allowed to say I really like this little head and how it stands? The mortar is a lovely medium to carve in to and I feel like I’m approaching these much like I approached my wood cuts by carving away the negative spaces and brushing over the positives with a bit of charcoal. I also like how the colour of the mortar adds to the piece to give it an almost aged historical feel. Not much time for creativity today what with a big cycle ride and house chores. But in between these activities I was able to sit down and carve these two out of mortar, the smaller one needs a few tweaks but it’s almost there.
