And finally this piece is finished. I decided to stain the head piece with oxide red chalk which I then sprayed with fixative. The final part was to scrub some of the staining away with a wire brush, this part reminded me of the story of the scrubbing away of paint off the Elgin Marbles Mortar, gorilla glue and chalk. . . . art #artistsoninstagram #artwork #kunst #sculptor #sculpture #contemporaryart #contemporaryartist #contemporarysculpture #artifact #tribal #museum #isolation #isolationcreation #isolationart
Ok so I messed up the original idea for the head, so it was back to the rubble and I think I have solved the problem. The top and bottom pieces won’t remain this colour as they are currently soaked due to having sat outside for some days in the rain. Once they are dry the gluing will begin. . . . . art #artistsoninstagram #artist #kunst #kundtwerk #sculptureart #sculpture #comtemporaryart #contemporarysculpture #mortar #stonecarving #wip #wipart #isolation #isolationcreation #isolationart
It’s slow going but this is now starting to take shape, the body is now done so now to focus on the head. . . . . art #artistsoninstagram #artist #kunst #kunstwerk #sculptor #stonesculpture #contemporaryart #contemporarysculpture #mortar #wip #wipart #wipartwork #isolation #isolationcreation #isolationart
Work has begun, how do I move on from my last piece? So far this shape is definitely saying monumental maybe even male in its stature, yet there is still a way to go. . . . . art #artist #artistsoninstagram #sculptor #contemporarysculptor #contemporaryart #contemporarysculpture #artefact #museum #antiquity #wip #wipart #isolation #isolationcreation
And this is now finished, there is an amount of Androgyny to this piece, most people will see and project on to it what they want. It came together rather quickly though, I decided to only focus on the head as a body form was already described by the bottom half of this figure. Whilst making it I had been reading up on Jacob Epstein and connected with these comments on Tribal Art and the ceremonial functions of tribal art. “As fetishes the importance is religious or at any rate, magical. They were used to impress, terrify and impress to the beholders a state of mind bordering on, or actually, hallucinatory “ Epstein also had this to say on the influence of tribal art on his work “ I am influenced by African sculpture in the same manner that all primitive work must influence the artist. African work has certain important lessons to teach that go to the root of all sculpture. I have tried to absorb those lessons without working in the African idiom. It would indeed be absurd for a European artist in these days to produce African idols, unlike all imitation it would be insincere” “ The word “influence” as I understand it, means more than a mere surface study, it means a full comprehension of both mind and technique, that go to the composition of the work, and a translation of that, according to personality the artist. A complete re-creation in fact through a new mind.” These comments are from Primitivism in 20th century art, the museum of modern art 1988 These quotes seem to sum up some of the way I think about my art practice. I ingest what I see and try to reimagine it in to my own visual language through what I create. . . . art #artistsoninstagram #artist #sculpture #contemporarysculpture #artefact #museum #contemporaryart #tribalart #stonecarving #mortar #isolation #isolationcreation #creationunderlockdown
Due to every day isolation distractions and lots of cogitating I’ve not been able to properly focus on this, but I think it is slowly starting to take shape. . . . . art #artistsoninstagram #artist #contemporaryart #contemporaryartist #contemporarysculpture #sculpture #carving #stonecarving #stonesculpture #artefact #wip #wipart #isolation #isolationcreation #isolationart
Humm pondering over this interesting selection pulled what was my garden. Left over relics of last years house renovation. We have a section of breeze block in a sort of head shape, a piece of rusted steel bar and a crumpled piece of roof lead. Now for the best part of the conundrum the deciding of how to place them together. . . . . art #artistsoninstagram #foundmaterials #juxtaposition #sculpture #contemporaryart #contemporarysculpture #wip #wipart #isolation #isolationcreation
As artists it’s natural to see what has come before as we really do not live in a bubble of our own. We are taking in everything and have a natural curiosity. So it’s only natural that I would come to this point Jacob Epstein the Rock Drill, what an amazing piece of Modernist sculpture, truly futuristic and totally powerful in its execution
