The beauty of Wabi Sabi

Some would say this evening is rather disastrous I know if this was in my past I would be beside myself totally inconsolable and pretty annoyed.
Oh how time and age change one’s views.
So as can be seen from these photos these pieces have been damaged, the slip holding them together and in some ways the balance was not strong enough to keep them upright. The pieces came apart in my hands, thankfully I have some wonder adhesive slip that magically joins parts together.
At one point I was going to try and wipe traces of these repairs away as the slip fires at a different colour, and then like a flash of inspiration i said no.
These areas where the slip squishes out help to add an extra dimension to these pieces, it adds the Wabi Sabi factor the acceptance of transience and imperfection, it is something I have tried to include within my work from the first time I heard of Wabi Sabi 13 years ago when visiting Japan.
I remember the realisation of this at the time rocked my world, yes we in the West strive for perfection but in reality the imperfections are what are important, they add character and discussion points they really are the beautiful fuckups that help add tension to a piece.
So yes to some these may look ugly but let’s just stop and take some time to realise that eventually the ugly can sometimes lead to ultimate beauty and enlightenment.
